Simon Denny at UQ Art Museum

Artist Simon Denny wanted a cardboard version of the Sydney Federal Courts of Australia benches, along with its chairs, for the Don’t Be Evil group show at UQ Art Museum, an exhibition that ran from July 2021 to January 2022. I approximated the shape based on photographs, and glued together layers of cardboard to create the 7m long bench. It was composed of six separate chunks with cavities inside to make them easy to transport from Melbourne to Brisbane. Denny’s board games were inset for gallery visitors to play. The chair had to be robust enough to last six months in a public space, and for this I created a digitally printed, flat-packed design that relied on a folded inner structure for strength – no glue needed! Simon Denny’s studio produced the office chair graphic.
