Fold Theory was commissioned to produce a three-dimensional art installation at Barkly Square shopping centre in Brunswick. The starting point for the design was history – of the site, and of modernist architecture. The Barkly Square site was originally a brickworks. These brick-like modules allow light to pass through, and when placed against the facade of the building act like modernist sun shading devices known as brises soleil. Brises soleil are normally made from concrete. To make them structurally sound in cardboard the geometry was triangulated, and to maximise north light they were contorted and twisted towards the sun.
