Nero Tapware commissioned Fold Theory to engineer and construct a nine-by-nine-metre ceiling from cardboard. Their in-house designer developed a complex geometry that, at this scale, would have been prohibitively heavy and costly if made from timber. Fold Theory crafted the ceiling beams by folding 3mm corrugated cardboard – lightweight and assembled without glue. The beams were prefabricated in parts and delivered by truck, then slotted together on the floor before being hoisted into the air for 48 hours while Harry the Hirer built the rest of the stand below. Finally, the ceiling was carefully lowered into place atop the walls. Fold Theory also provided recyclable cardboard shelving and table legs, creating a sustainable contrast to the otherwise conventional materials used. Nero subsequently commissioned Fold Theory to design and construct their next trade show stand predominantly from cardboard.
