This bench-cum-bookshelf was a response to a design brief set by the 2010 Melbourne Fringe Furniture exhibition curators. The brief involved considering the conflict between urban and rural space and how the two could meet in a piece of furniture. The Log Book Shelf takes the theme literally: the form is a fallen tree trunk fused with a cityscape. This one-off flat-pack cardboard furniture was assembled from over 300 digitally-cut pieces, slotted together without glue. The experimental project tested the limits of computer modelling, CNC production and the structural properties of very thin cardboard.
The Log Book Shelf was Highly Commended at the Fringe Furniture awards.
